emails uncrypted in metas (YOAST settings…)

    Hello,
    ‘Just installed the plugin which seems awesome! Thanx!

    Yoast SEO actually puts uncrypted email addresses in the source code when such email addresses are provided in the page excerpts.

    Due to my YOAST settings, they appear in these lines:

    <meta name=”description” content= …

    <meta property=”og:description” content= …

    <meta name=”twitter:description” content= …

    What’s your opinion about this behaviour?
    Is it risky? Can Spam bots retrieve email addresses in the metas?

    Mhh, that’s hard to know. I’m working on a PRO version of this plugin that encodes email addresses in meta tags.

    Do you mean the PRO version of Yoast encodes email addresses in meta tags by itself or that it let EAEncoder do such job?
    I just had a look at Yoast Pro features and didn’t find such info, nor in Yoast docs and forums…

    Hello Till,
    Here is the answer from the free YOAST support, which clarified my concerns:

    Yoast is not capable of encrypting email addresses that you use in the meta description. If you are concerned that a spam bot may harvest an email address you used in your meta description we would recommend not including the email there.

    Wherease many spam bots are looking for mailto: tags to find email addresses, we unfortunately cannot anticipate what amount of page data a bot uses to find new email addresses.

    In conclusion:
    – Yoast do not encrypt email addresses in the meta descriptions
    – mailto: tags are the major spam factor and mentionning only the email adresses (“***@***.**”) is not as risky, but not 100% sure either.
    Do you agree?

    Thanks a lot for your support/time and for this great plugin.
    ‘Just tried the [encode][/encode] shortcode feature in order to encode “tel:” links and it works well too. You may want to communicate more on this feature too, don’t you?
