When I go to that link, it gives me not a PDF, but an HTML page where I can download the PDF.

You need to provide a direct link to the PDF or it will not embed. Perhaps this will not work with files hosted on Dropbox?

Yes that’s what I’m trying to determine, is if it will work with files hosted on dropbox. I’ve tried every way, but the only method that is successful is to upload the file to the media library first.

Have you had success using a dropbox or other cloud link ?

I always host the PDFs on the same server that is hosting WordPress.

OK. I think I’m going to try a Zappier or IFTT mechanism possibly , to FTP the files to the server as they are posted to a dropbox folder. Then use the hosted URL with the embed tool. I’m just trying to avoid having the user login to WordPress if possible. Need a way for them to save the file from their machine and bang it’s on the site.

Being able to embed a file right from dropbox will be awesome in a future revision though!

    Thanks Pat!

Not possible. This is an issue with the way Dropbox serves files; they are not a web host.

You have piqued my curiosity, what sort of setup are you building?

It’s a restaurant website, and we want to make posting the menu as easy as possible for the end user to post the daily special they type up. So they are already using dropbox and thought if we can just have them save as normal and have it on the site automatically then great.

There is another tool that allows for one to email a message to the db and it parses the email and embeds the attachment. This might work too.

So we might have a solution here: https://www.ads-software.com/support/topic/does-this-work-for-dropbox

After several attempts, and clearing of cache etc, using the above seems to actually be working. Once we go live and it’s in full action we’ll know more, but at the moment we’ve used dropbox link, that short code, and adjusted the end of the URL to = 1.

Logged out of dropbox, cleared cached, and tested.
