    My host reported that a scan showed an infected index.php file, located in an wp-contents/uploads folder for 2015/09. With trepidation, I deleted it. (I don’t have a backup of that folder, although I do have backups of all files for my theme.) Rather, I regularly use the Export tool.

    To my surprise, deleting the file did not seem to affect anything on my site. Moreover, I have folders for only four months in 2015, and now all four are empty. I have not used Import, at least not yet, given that the site looks OK and fearing that I’d restore an infection.

    Can you explain to me what I might have lost, what those folders are for, and where my content is actually stored? Would you recommend an Import? Thanks.

  • Hi,

    If somebody can put/edit folder in your site, it means, he can do anything else. So just delete one file it’s not a fix for hacked website.
    So roll out your backup and check this https://codex.www.ads-software.com/FAQ_My_site_was_hacked

    Peter, I believe you misunderstand me. I wasn’t saying that someone had placed an unanticipated folder on my site. Indeed, my puzzlement was in part that I’d have expected a folder in wp-contents for each month, and I don’t have one, and mostly the folders I have go back well before any warning of infection. And they all appear empty, even of hidden files. I’m also not worried about infection as I’ve scanned all the folders with good software and as I’ve none of the symptoms that cause most people to suspect a hack and to panic, as that article describes. The site looks fine to me. But that’s not the issue.

    Rather, I was just asking where my content resides, given that I’d read articles about where, and it led me to folders that look incomplete and empty. Oh, and again, what the I might have lost, if anything, by deleting the index file in one such folder

    Your posts and all data are saved in a database.
    wp-content directory contains themes folder – the place for theme’s files, plugins – files for plugins. Both are just files what can be in most cases reuploaded again with fresh copy of theme/plugin’s files.
    It contains also folder uploads – it sores your media (images, videos … whatever you upload to your media library).

    Default index.php file in wp-content directory is just

    <?php
    // Silence is golden.

    nothing more.
    If you saw some date related folders it was probably in your upload directory if you chose to save media by date in Dashboard – Settings – Media.

    Thanks a lot. I was obviously wondering why various Web tutorials kept saying the posts were in the uploads folders, since the folders were empty and intermittent, while my posts are still visible. That explains a lot.
