Empty Media Library

    Hello,

    My media library had suddenly gone blank. When I try to access it, nothing is displayed. In addition, I am unable to insert media files to posts or pages, nor am I able to upload any new media files anymore. When trying to insert an image, I get the error message, “This block has encountered an error and cannot be previewed.”

    On the frontend, everything appears fine. I also checked the files in File Manager of cPanel and everything appears to be there.

    I don’t believe browser cache is an issue because I noticed this right after I did a clean install on my MacBook. The last time things were running fine was on May 31st and I did a clean install on June 7th. The issue happens in both Safari and Chrome. I also tried to access my backend from another Windows computer running Chrome and I got the same result.

    I tried de-activating all of my plugins and I changed my theme to twenty-nineteen, but the issue still persists.

    I’m running WordPress 5.2.1. Any help would be appreciated.

  • The website shows that the media folder is only just ‘uploads/’ instead of ‘uploads/{{year}}/{{mm}}’.
    Have you explicitly made changes for the above to happen on the site?
    If not, I would probably go to your files via file manager or FTP or SSH, navigate to wp-content/uploads folder and ensure that it’s writable (755), then try to upload an image in the library again via WP back end.
    If that does not work, go back to the uploads/ folder, and inside, manually create a folder 2019, and inside this folder, create another folder for the month e.g. ’06’.
    Then upload the image again.

    Having my uploads set to just “uploads” was an intentional change at the time I initially set up the website.

    In the end I contacted my host and they checked out my WordPress installation. They couldn’t find the cause of the problem either, so in the end they did a restore to a month old backup. Things are up and running again, but nobody knows what caused it to stop working in the first place.
