dwinden has the answers but take a look here
https://www.ads-software.com/support/topic/failure-to-write-banned-users-to-htaccess where he helped me yesterday. Look for $no_errors far down in the conversation.
    good luck

Would you be so kind and let me know what PHP version you are using ?

The symptom of this issue might be affected by PHP version.
    Thank you.

Appreciate you getting back on this. sorry not sure how to tell which version of PHP I have.

I did get it working again but it was a bit of a process. I deleted all the IPs in the ban host box and then pasted them back again but it would only accept two or three at a time.

it’s bedtime in this part of the world, I’ll check in again in the morning.

    Thanks

Weird, because you can normally copy\paste in dozens of ip addresses.
I would certainly recommend to apply the fix for the issue as described in this topic:

    https://www.ads-software.com/support/topic/failure-to-write-banned-users-to-htaccess

After applying the above fix at least you will be properly notified when there are invalid ip addresses specified.

You can find the PHP version in the “PHP Information” section of the “System Information” metabox on the first iTSec plugin Dashboard page.
