Enable post images to switch in place

Hello.

I am currently struggling to figure out the best way to display images within a post as a switchable series (only first image is displayed, full-size, with ‘1,2,3,4..’ links underneath, image is switched in place on clicking one of the number links. Don’t need thumbnails displayed or a lightbox).

Have looked at pulling a number of images associated with a post using [gallery] function, but its beyond my peabrain as to how to target them, in order to apply some positioning and z-depth trickery.

I’m sure there must be plugin that would get me 50% of the way to what I need, but several hours toiling hasn’t revealed anything promising. For unknown reasons the Inline Gallery plugin (which looked promising) bars me from it’s options screen upon activation.

I would be eternally grateful if someone knows of a solution, or even a vague way to approach this..
