Enabling plugins sometimes kills site – random

  • Running WP2.1

    OpenSuSE 10.2
    Apache 2.2.3
    MySQL 5.0.26
    PHP 5.2.0

    P4 2.8GHz, Hyperthreading on
    1GB RAM
    80GB HD, 65GB free.

    When enabling plugins, it seems somewhat random that enabling a plug will totally bork the site…no 404s, no errors per se, just an empty page returned from every URL.

    Most recently, I enabled Photon, then set the options and saved…poof, gone. Restore db from backup.

    Am I doing something wrong? I’m very new to WordPress, but not so new to LAMP.

    It’s possible for a malfunctioning plugin to prevent the site from displaying. However, deactivating a plugin in this scenario (and restoring the site) is as simple as removing the plugin’s php files.

    If you find that the database is becoming damaged, then I would look elsewhere. Most plugins don’t touch the database (some do, admittedly).

    The empty page most likely comes from the error_reporting/display_errors settings in PHP. You can either check the error_log or change your settings (see the php manual)
