    Hi WP lovers,

    My WP 5.0.4 is having encoding issues, but only in the entry-content markup. I am not sure, but i think it happened when I installed a new plugin (Easy foot notes – no issues about encoding on the plugin page), that I deactivated and deleted now.

    So it means all the accents are good everywhere (menu, titles, ..) except in the main content area.

    I’ve tried different fixes, but nothing works so far:

    – charset is indeed in UTF8;
    – i’ve checked and tried to change the collation of my DB in MySQL: UTF8_unicode_ci or UTF8_general_ci -> no changes;
    – i’ve checked and tried to change the collation of the wp_post table -> no changes;

    My host only have PHP 5.5, i cannot update WP to 5.2.1.

    Any new ideas..?

    Thank you very much.

    My recommendation is to move away from that hosting provider.

    PHP 5.5 was discontinued in January 2016: https://www.php.net/supported-versions.php

    That means your hosting provider has not been able to patch any PHP security vulnerabilities on your server for the past 3 and a half years.

    WordPress currently requires PHP 5.6.20 or higher, and recommends PHP 7.3.

    All of our recommended hosting providers offer this: https://www.ads-software.com/hosting/

    You can move WordPress following this guide: https://www.ads-software.com/support/article/moving-wordpress/

    Hi James,

    thank you for your suggestion. Indeed, I have to find a new provider – and it has been my plans for the near future.

    I’ve just started back debugging this issue, turns out it’s the Social Warfare plugin that has been messing up the encoding in entry-content. Don’t know why, though.

    I was so sure it was a newly installed plugin that generate this problem, that I forgot the basics: deactivate all plugins and see what’s happening.

    So this post is kinda resolved. Thank you!
