I have a lot of very text-heavy posts and after indexing, the Relevanassi index table is HUGE — it’s more than 100 MB, about eight times the size of the entire rest of the database, and big enough to trigger a warning from Updraft every time the database backs up. Is this normal? It’s exceedingly cumbersome and makes me concerned that I’m going to get a nasty note from my web host about the size of the backup directory.

It’s perfectly normal, that’s how Relevanssi works. It needs to build the index in order to return relevant results.

If that’s a problem, you might want to look at external search solutions that keep the search index outside your own database, for example Algolia, Swiftype or AddSearch.

There aren’t really ways to make the index smaller, except by adding stop words, but that’s not going to help much.

    Okay, thanks.
