When I try to acces my website or wp-admin I get this 403 error. This is the exact error:

    ”Forbidden

You don’t have permission to access /wp-admin/index.php on this server.
Server unable to read htaccess file, denying access to be safe

Additionally, a 403 Forbidden error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.”

I’ve tried to figure it out myself with a little help of google and the (way) older messages on this forum but it didn’t got me far.
I found the .htacces file but it doesn’t make any sense to me, as well as the index.php file. So I have no idea what to do now.

The error occurd after I added my social media icons which I designed myself. I got the html code for my icons from this website: https://www.image-maps.com/

I really hope someone can help me with this because I really don’t know what to do anymore..

    Thanks!

  • Hey, xAmyvm!

    Hang in there….

Try the following steps (in order):

    1. FTP into your site and rename or delete the .htaccess file. Then, try to get in. If you can, then your .htaccess file was corrupt.

    2. FTP into your site. Then, rename the \wp-content\plugins folder to something else. Then try your site again. If you can get in, you have a bad plugin.

    3. If step 1 didn’t work, rename the \wp-content\themes folder to something else, and see if you can get in. If you can, you have a bad theme.

    4. If 1-3 don’t work, FTP your wp-config.php file to your desktop, open it up with a text app and see if it’s pointed to the right place, that the
database exists, and the login info for the database is correct. (You can check this through logging onto your cPanel and opening up phpMyAdmin and checking out the database assigned to your site.)

    Hi!

Thank you so much for the information! I feel a little bit stupid now because, it’s quite a miracle, but my site is working again. I have been searching for the solutions for over an hour and nothing worked. And a few minutes ago I just hopefully refreshed again and it’s working. Weird enough. So I have no clue what the problem was/is (I definitely hope was) but it solved itself.

Anyways, again, thank you so much. At least when it happens again I know what to do because of you! ??
