I have setup wordpress multisite on a LEMP stack. Originally, it was a single site installation that hosted my blog musingsofamaverick.org. I recently modified wp_config.php to enable multisite with subdomains. I watched and followed the instructions in the video at elementor.com up to the point where I was told to edit .htaccess. Nginx does not use that and that step was skipped.

Under My Sites ->Network Mangement->Dashboard, I set up a new site with the url odyssey.musingsofamaverick.org and gave it a title that now shows up under My Sites. I also set up a new subdirectory /var/www/odyssey to store the new website files.

Everything works fine on original site, but when I try to access the dashboard for the new site, I get a 404 message.

At this point, I’m at a loss. I am attempting to migrate another website on a commercial host to my own server. I have backed up my other site with updraftplus and it is waiting for me at dropbox, but I have no idea how to get access to the dashboard for the new site and install the backup from dropbox.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

  • You mentioned that “Nginx does not use that and that step was skipped” – Even though Nginx does not use .htaccess , you will still need to manually configure server blocks to properly route requests to your domain. Skipping this step is most likely the culprit… Can you confirm that you have done this?

So, since you’re using subdomains according to your previous post (e.g odyssey.musingsofamaverick.org ) , your DNS settings will need a wildcard subdomain (example: *.musingsofamaverick.org) pointing to your server’s IP.

If you haven’t done this yet, make sure you update your DNS records.. it would be best to talk with your hosting about this, as they are always very quick in handling such site changes for you. .

I need to close this topic for now. I rebuilt my server as a standalone that is working. I will try later to install a second WP to host a second site as that seems much easier than multisite. Later on, I may come back to multisite, but for now, I have abandoned it.
