• I recently just installed wordpress. I come to my login and type in all the info. I hit login and I get this white page with this message:

    Directory Listing Denied
This Virtual Directory does not allow contents to be listed.

I’m not sure what this means or what I need to do to fix it. Any help would be helpful

  • Well, that tells me a LOT. Thank you.

Your entire domain is throwing 403 (forbidden) errors. Contact your hosting service.

oh okay. What do I say to them. I’m not sure what at 403 error is. Sorry, lol, I’m very new to website creation, and all this code stuff.

also, when I was reading that stuff about index.php, I changed my index page- the one I created for my homepage to index.php, should I change that back to .htm if that wasn’t the problem.

Here’s an explanation in plain speak. Again, if you can check your error logs, it should say when, why, what.

I checked through my error logs. I didn’t see anything that said anything about errors, of course with my newbie eyes I could have missed something. But I didn’t notice anything mentioning errors.

Thanks for your help so far. I’m know I’m probably testing your patience, thanks for having patience.

    I’ll check out the site.

Thanks that link explained a lot about 403 errors. It would seem then that my message is acting like a 403 message. It doesn’t say its a 403 message, but it essentially means the same thing.

It says 403 in mine, that’s how I knew. ??

And, no, you aren’t wearing on my patience at all. I am getting near my bedtime, though, fair warning.

lol. I’ll probably have to go to bed soon as well. It seems the best thing for me to do is contact my hosting service and talk to them about the error. I could try installing it again. I do have a question. You mentioned something about not installing image files. Does that mean I should remove all the images out of the wordpress file then upload it. I think if i try a reinstall I’ll do this- if this is what you were talking about.

Well, the problem I’m seeing is that your DOMAIN, https://simpleswingreview.com/ and https://www.simpleswingreview.com/ is throwing 403 errors, as well, so the whole user folder is locked down. That tells me that something set off server security and locked your website down, so to get it back up, you’ll have to talk to your hosting service.

It could be something simple that a WP guru can tell you, though. I’m just an old timer on the web, and I tend to fly by the seat of my pants a lot of times. Comes from working DOS so many years, I think. Modern folks who know php and MySQL and Apache inside and out which much of is what I call voodoo programming know a lot more.

oh okay. That makes sense. Maybe the installation of WordPress itself set it off. I did have to do a bunch of reinstalls cause microsoft expression has a crappy ftp client. lol. Filezilla finally did the job. Maybe all those reinstalls seemed suspicious cause it involved alot of deleting and reapplying. Or something like that. But i think I’ll contact them tommorrow.

Thanks for all your help, I learned alot. I need to go to bed now though lol.

    Thanks again.

Me too. I just finished upgrading the last blog for my clients that I’m going to do tonight. Tomorrow is another day. Chances are, come morning, they’ll have your domain back up…or will as soon as you complain. ?? Squeeky wheels and all that. ‘Night.

I am getting this same error. I installed on our Windows 2003 Server with IIS so I can’t contact the “hosting” company.

I went to the folder and did a right click – Properties” and set all users to FULL CONTROL?

Also I didn’t do any FTP as I just downloaded the zip file on the server and unzipped it right on the server.
