After the update I got a critical error as WordPress notice. I can’t access the log files. If I rename the plugin folder the problem is gone. I have tested it and it’s got nothing to do with a theme or other plugins, just Yoast SEO is causing the trouble.
If I change DEBUG to true in wp-config.php, the problem is gone.
It feels a bit weird to have set this to true, to avoid the critical error message. Hope you can fix it with this basic information.

  • Hi @jramerman,

We’re sorry to hear about the error on your site. It’s really unusual to hear that changing the WP_DEBUG setting in your wp-config.php file would cause any errors. What is the error message?

We do not recommend setting WP_DEBUG to true on a production site, so please know that this setting is not required for Yoast SEO to function correctly.

Since we’re not able to reproduce the error, can you download and re-install the Yoast SEO plugin manually and see if the error appears? Please know that you may need to clear any page cache or caching on your server to see the update.

We have a guide available here: How can I manually update my plugin?

    Hi,
Sorry, I forgot to mention that I have downloaded the plugin manually and after deleting the old files I uploaded the new ones.
    That didn’t help.

It’s not that WP_DEBUG setting is causing the error. I saw in another thread that someone changed this WP_DEBUG from false to true and that it helped with the problem with this update.

That has nothing to do with caching etc. I agree having this set to TRUE in a production environment is a no go.
So it would be helpful if there was another thing I could do to avoid the error.

    The error I have says:
There has been a critical error on your website.
I am sure it’s only from Yoast SEO, not from other plugins or themes, I have tested that.

    Kind regards,
    Jolanda

    Hi @jramerman ,

We are not sure what’s causing this on your site but can you please confirm few things for us?

    1. Are you running the latest WordPress 5.4.2? If you update to the latest, does the issue resolve?
    2. Does your site meet the plugin requirements here?
    3. Can you please try performing a conflict check? You can find the steps here: https://yoast.com/help/how-to-check-for-plugin-conflicts/.

    @manofmany
Please create a new issue if you are experiencing a similar problem as this helps us in tracking as this can be caused by many different variables (WordPress version, other plugins, etc).

    Hi,
Sorry but I read too many bad reviews for the Health Check plugin. I rather not take the risk. I have now downgraded to Yoast 14.4 and set debug in config.php back to false.
With that setting, I don’t have no problems any more. Hopefully it will be fixed with one of the next updates. Sorry I can’t offer you more input about the problem, I simply can’t afford having this site going down again.
    You can close the ticket.
    Kind regards,
    Jolanda
