• I have had Multisite enabled for a while but haven’t used it yet. I’ve been trying to start now and am getting some roadblocks..

Before enabling Multisite I had about 4,000 users on my WordPress install already. It has been a long, kind of complicated journey porting through other systems so some users have usernames that are not in the standard WordPress syntax.

I cannot delete my users and start over..

If I make a new site via the admin panel, and do it with a username that is totally new, it works fine. If I made it with ANY user that already exists, it says “There was an error creating the user.” Which seems a little duh to me, because that user already exists.

    No other errors.

    Help?

Some users have numbers, some have uppercase letters.. I’ve tried the two plugins I found (after a lot of searching!) that is supposed to help with that but it’s just for new users, not making sites for existing users.

Any advice as to what to do here would be greatly appreciated. Or direct me in the right place to find more info.

You don’t have to make a new user when you make a new site.

I’m not trying to make a new user. I’m trying to make a site that has the url of an existing user, and that’s what happens.

Interesting… Can you make a site named klhdfsdf and then go in and change it via the site edit section?

You mean you’re making a site with a URL that matches the username.

In that case, it’s possibly it’s tossing the wrong error when it’s really invalid characters in a URL. Give us an example of one of the usernames that is borking.

why not send existing users to the signup page (while they are logged in) and get them to make a new site for themselves, with any name?

I can change the URL of a site after I make it, yes.

After some fussing I can also change it to the url of an existing username, so it’s not throwing conflicts after the fact. That’s good… ?

I’m only enabling new blogs for a handful of users and I need it to match their username for other reasons, so that’s not really a choice to me to let them do it on their own.

I suppose for now I will make a temporary name and switch it over and then give the user permissions to admin it. Unless somebody comes up with a better idea. ??

Yeah, I think it’s probably from the various imports and whatnot that brought us to ‘non standard name whacky’ :/

I can deal with that. Thanks for the suggestion! ??
