Error: "Directory / is not writeable" after upgrade

– MySQL up to date (at least 5.0)? YES
– PHP up to date (at least 5.2.4)? YES
– The mod_rewrite Apache module activated? YES
– PHP Safe Mode OFF? YESI have a multisite installation of wordpress. I run wordpress 4.0 and nexgen gallery 2.0.66.27. When I want to create a new gallery it tells me that the root directory of the wordpress installation has to be writable: “Directory / is not writeable !”
