Error establishing a database connection

  • I tried to follow the install instructions (created database and put info in the wp-config.php file and uploaded them to a “blog” file) and got this error when I tried to access the install script in my browser:

    Error establishing a database connection
    This either means that the username and password information in your wp-config.php file is incorrect or we can’t contact the database server at localhost. This could mean your host’s database server is down.

    Are you sure you have the correct username and password?
    Are you sure that you have typed the correct hostname?
    Are you sure that the database server is running?

    So I have to put in a value for the local host? What would it be? the server name? the username? the path to my web site server?
