• I have a website that was being hosted by GoDaddy and unfortunately, the hosting account was terminated for several months. Once I got a new hosting account, I tried to upload a saved older version of the site and now I get the following error: Error establishing a database connection

    Anyone have any ideas?

  • The new hosting account probably has different database name, user and password values than your previous site. Which means changing the wp-config.php file.

But a more fundamental question: As well as uploading the files from the old site, did you also restore the WordPress database? That, of course, assumes that you have a backup of the database from the old site.

How do I know if I backed up the database?

It will usually be a file with an .sql or .sql.gz or .sql.zip extension.

Some web hosts back them up in the strangest places in the directory structure of a “Site Backup”.

It is, as you suggest, also possible that it was never backed up at all.

Anything you know about how the backup was created would help solve the mystery.
