I installed wordpress / nextgen gallery / arras theme / wordpress stats.

I receive the message “Error establishing a database connection”. This message is intermittent. One second the site works and the next I receive the error message. I can do absolutely nothing and the site will eventually work again but its up time is limited.

    1) My database, username, and password was auto created by my host (fatcow). Going into cpanel and going to mysql, my database name & user name match. My password was auto created so I technically don’t know if it is correct but I can update that if needed.

    2) I searched and found issues with the Database Collate (thing) and decided to add “UTF8” into the empty space in the wp-config file. This actually seemed to get the site instantly up but went down about 20 minutes later. I then logged into phpadmin and went to databases. At the end of the database list that includes terms like: “wp_posts” “wp_terms” it says “latin1_swedish_ci”, is this correct? All other fields indicate utf8.

At this point I am going to try to disable the theme and the nextgen plugin gallery as I suspect it has something to do with one or the other. I will also try switching the password of the database, however switching the names seems pointless as they match. If you have any suggestions please let me know.

What’s really puzzling is why the system will come back up?

*Should be noted all databases seem to be running correctly from my host.
*This issue started when i tried to install both wordpress and joomla. I installed wordpress fine and had joomla installed to https://www.mysite.com/joomla. That also installed fine. Next morning I went to go mess with everything and awoke to the error. I got so frustrated I had my host format account and just started over. The end result was the same which is why I suspect the theme or gallery to be an issue.

***So I just decided to clear the cache on my netbook and the site came up. At this point I will try to disable the theme and gallery before it goes down again.

    Fun times.

    ****UPDATES****

    1) I disabled both theme and gallery. (Problem still persists.)
    2) Generic theme applied. (Problem still persists)
    3) Version: 5.0.77 in database.
    4) I literally opened about 20 to 30 tabs of my site and some loaded and others showed the error.

It sounds like your database server is randomly going offline, which is a problem with fatcow. You should contact their support department the next time you notice the problem.

This is my second host in under a week so I hope not. ?? Thanks for the suggestion. Might give them a call but I hate calling into call centers.

Opening multiple tabs of my website allows some pages to load while others show a database error? How can my database be incorrect if it loads the tab right next to it ??

In that case, the database server is probably just overloading (bottlenecking). The symptoms are the same as a full database crash, only they happen for just a few seconds.

Just had a chat with fatcow.com support. Pretty much the usual response you get from callcenters which is “sorry”. They tested their servers which appear to be fine. I asked them to log the call and from here on out I will just video tape the error occurring and upload to my youtube account. Ill keep you posted.

    Video

Name of video: Error establishing connection to Database.

Anyone know what could be causing this? I put the picture of the UTF8 suspected issue at the end of the video. Thanks for any help.

Videos will added as I will keep making videos until the issue is resolved and/or I cancel yet another host.

    More updates:

    – The issue happens on Opera, Firefox, and Google Chrome all updated to their latest releases.

    – Can letting a browser sit idle some how lose the database connection? Kind of like a power saving feature?

    – Could my ISP cause this type of issue in some way?

    – Happens on my netbook & main PC.

    Thanks for any help offered.

More than one INDEX key was created for column comment_approved. Would this be the cause? After running a database test of some sort I am left with this error and at this point its the only thing I can possibly repair on my end. Anyone know how to do so? Searching google now will report my findings.

I created a support ticket with fatcow. Still happening. Messed with some database tests but everything passes.. Ill keep you posted with results.

Another video demonstrating about 7 minutes of errors. I clear cache and do normal clicking around.

I have started to think the category menu was causing some issue with the db so have tweaked that recently but problem still persists.

Thats the response I got from FatCow’s excellent customer service. Oh and I made another video this morning.

    Hello ****,

Currently, the website https://peasnwaffles.com/ is loading fine without any issues. Could you please check it at your end?

If you have any further questions, please update the Support Console.

    Sincerely,

Sounds like it’s time for a new host.

Since that message I have not received any further database errors. The site loaded quite slow (10 – 15 seconds) a few times but other than that no further database errors all day. FatCow did keep in contact with me throughout the day but really provided no help as they didn’t do anything according to their response. The problem essentially fixed it itself, which I am happy about however I can’t help but feel others, if not myself, will run into this issue again because the root cause was never found.

*I reset the collation wp-config file back to ‘ ‘ instead of having UTF8 in the empty space as I imagine that was no the root cause.

Got the “error establishing database connection” again this morning. At this point I consider this to be fatcow.com’s service. Nothing in my site has changed and i’m not even about to troubleshoot it. Just making a note of this.
