• Hi!

A while ago I installed a multisite on gettingcloseto.com so I could use a multilingual plugin. It was working for a while, but one day, without even logging in, the Error establishing a database connection screen appeared. On the wp-admin page it told me the database tables may need to be repaired, so I did what it said, all tables were ok but it still did not work. In the end I ended up re-installing WordPress and starting from scratch.

Now I am getting the same error yet again (after not having touched the back end of the site).
The hosting company says that everything is running fine at their end and that anyway they don’t provide support for multisites.

Anyone have an idea? Is a multisite just the wrong way to go? Is that even the problem?
I would be so grateful for any solutions you smarter people may have.

    Thanks a lot!

  • That erorr generally tells you that the database connection details are wrong in your wp-config.php file. In your case I’d say to double-check these first, but I’m not convinced that’s your problem.

From what you’ve said, I suspect that either the web server is having problems connecting to the MySQL server, or that the MySQL is having issues of it’s own and isn’t reachable. As for your hosting company saying that everything is fine from their end, they pretty much all say that until you can prove them wrong, so don’t take that as a final answer. You should be looking at the error logs that you have access to so that you can see what’s happening and why. You can also turn on debug mode in WordPress, but that’s a last resort.

Multisite itself won’t create this problem. There’s no difference in the way that connections are made between a standard site and a multisite installation.

If I was you I’d be looking for a better web host that can actually troubleshoot the database issues.

Thanks for answering! I was assuming I was the problem but maybe it is a hosting issue after all.

I am looking at the error logs – what kind of thing should I be looking out for that would prove to them that the problem is on their end?

I just realized I am signed up with them until 2015. Maybe I will look around anyway.
