Since a recent WP core update, I have observed that selecting any plugin for an update in the updates page causes the Select All box to be checked. It does not affect which plugins are selected. It can be unchecked with no effect. If it is manually checked, then all plugins for updates are checked.

This did not use to happen. If all the updatable plugins were checked manually, then that box became checked. Now it does if any plugins are checked, which is a UI error.

This may be a plugin or theme conflict. Please attempt to disable all plugins, and use one of the default (Twenty*) themes. If the problem goes away, enable them one by one to identify the source of your troubles.

If you can install plugins, install and activate “Health Check”: https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/health-check/
It will add some additional features under the menu item under Tools > Site Health.
On its troubleshooting tab, you can Enable Troubleshooting Mode. This will disable all plugins, switch to a standard WordPress theme (if available), allow you to turn your plugins on and off and switch between themes, without affecting normal visitors to your site. This allows you to test for various compatibility issues.
There’s a more detailed description about how to use the Health Check plugin and its Troubleshooting Mode at https://make.www.ads-software.com/support/handbook/appendix/troubleshooting-using-the-health-check/

    Thanks for the prompt reply.

I am encountering this on all my sites. I went to a test / demo site that I set up. It has the current WP core. It has only 3 plugins, Optin Monster, The HostGator Plugin, and WPVivid. The first two currently need updates. It was running the Astra theme. The HostGator Plugin is not present on the other sites I have had the issue with.

With the Astra theme, the same thing happened. I activated the Twenty Twenty Four theme. The same thing happens. In fact if I select one of the two plugins for update and then unselect it, the Select All box remains checked.

Here’s a loom video of the behavior: https://www.loom.com/share/61fb9db018c045b7935032d0979f2fdb?sid=73272de6-7c71-4707-bba4-0ffe616dd481

If you still need me to do the more extensive testing, let me know and I will.

Once I update the plugins, it will be hard to do the testing again – I won’t have anything to check/uncheck.

Correcting my last sentence: I made a back up, so I can restore the site to the current state.

I ran a Health Check from the Dashboard. One of the items is:

    Outdated SQL server Performance

The SQL server is a required piece of software for the database WordPress uses to store all your site’s content and settings.

For optimal performance and security reasons, you should consider running MySQL version 8.0 or higher. Contact your web hosting

Is that likely to be the cause?

No, the message has nothing to do with what you see in the checkboxes. But you should still check whether you should change hosting, as future updates could possibly become a problem.

Regarding your actual problem: this is not an error in that sense. The checkbox “Select all” to mark all plugins is only there as a graphical tool to mark all plugins with one click. There is no other function behind it. The fact that it is set when clicking on individual plugins serves as an indication that something is already selected. In any case, you must check the plugins to update them. “Select all” serves as a tool to select all at once.

If you have any suggestions for changes to this purely graphical procedure, you are welcome to describe them in the Core Trac so that developers can evaluate them: https://core.trac.www.ads-software.com/newticket

What I am seeing is a change from all the historical interactions I have had with WP. “Select All” only used to be triggered (other than by clicking it explicitly) if I actually selected all the plugins. It is now triggered if I select any plugins.

I believe the same happens in the update box for themes. That is also a departure from previous behavior and also, in my view, a bug.

This is not a hosting issue. I have had it occur on all the websites I manage, representing several different hosts.

My understanding was that this forum was the correct place to report a bug. Do you feel that it should be in the Core Trac?

The checkbox work for me just like they do for you. That’s why I can easily understand what you mean. I have no problem with this, as I can understand the usability at the point described above.

The forums here are there so that users like you and I can help each other solve problems, see: https://www.ads-software.com/support/guidelines/ – if you want to report change requests or bugs, you have to enter them in the Core Trac. This is the only place where developers who take care of the core will look at them and process the reports accordingly.

OK. I submitted a ticket at Core Trac.

    Thanks for the advice.
