Hi there, I would like some help because I no longer have access to my wordpress dashboard. This is a personal website (hosted by OVH) and when I try to log in I get the message “An error was encountered while trying to authenticate. Please try again”. I’ve seen on the forums that this happens sometimes and I’ve looked at the answers but nothing quite matches and what I’ve tried doesn’t work (I refreshed the page several times, cleaned the cookies, and tried adding www to the connection address, tried on Chrome and Edge…). I logged in yesterday without problem and I haven’t changed anything on my website, except that there was an automatic update of Wordfence Security (from version 7.10.4 to 7.10.5) and Jetpack (from version 12.7 to 12.7 .1) during the night. So I suspect a bug or a conflict at this level but from there I don’t know what to do. Thank you for your suggestions and help.

  • Hi art0102,

You can check if any of the plugins are causing the issue by manually deactivating them. To do this, access your website’s files via FTP, phpMyAdmin, or the file manager provided by your hosting service. Check out this article for a step-by-step walkthrough: https://www.wpbeginner.com/plugins/how-to-deactivate-all-plugins-when-not-able-to-access-wp-admin/

Once you’ve confirmed the culprit plugin, I recommend reaching out to their support forum, so the developers and support community can help you better with this.

If the issue persists, or you need help in doing the steps, you can also contact your hosting support to help you check server logs and see if anything gets logged there.

Hope this helps and your issue is resolved soon!

THANK YOU! (I was hoping I wouldn’t need to put my hands in the engine…) Best regards ??

    1. Rename plugins:
First, you need to rename the Wordfence plugin folder, Have doubts about the success of 2FA or reCAPTCHA, or perhaps question whether they are not appearing initially for authentication. I also suggest to disabling other plugins (In your case Jetpack and others that you currently use) and trying to log into your dashboard.
    2. Rename theme:
      1. Log into your cPanel account or FTP.
      2. Navigate to public_html > wp-content > theme.
      3. Rename the theme folder, and try to access your dashboard.
    3. Corrupted login file:
Back up WordPress before deleting the login file.
Download the most recent version of WordPress and then log into your cPanel account or FTP. Navigate to public_html > wp-config file. Add your login details. Now try to log into your dashboard.

I followed the instructions in the link in the previous answer from Sania, I am still doing the tests (the problem is probably due to an extension I guess), Worfence and Jetpack are OK. I don’t have a solution to my problem yet but I’m logged, and I think I will find it in the next hour so thank you both!
