    Dear Sirs,

    I am getting the following error message when I install the new version of your plugin.

    Warning: Parameter 2 to Groups_Post_Access::posts_where() expected to be a reference, value given in /var/sites/a/associates.tardisonline.co.uk/public_html/wp-includes/class-wp-hook.php on line 298

    I am pretty sure this is a plugin(s) conflict as I do not get this message on a clean install of wordpress using the same theme, but I cannot seem to locate the plugin(s) that is causing the conflict.

    Please can you look into this and let me know your thoughts.

    I look forward to hearing from you.

    Kind regards,

    Ian

    I think I have solved my own issue.

    Downgrade to PHP 5.6 from 7.1 and the error message goes away.

    Same problem here!

    And @hornet25, downgrading a PHP version is not a solution of course ??

    Update, WP menu pages stop working with Groups enabled (PHP 7.1).

    @keraweb, a bit frustrated and have mixed feelings about this. This plugin is the only one I have found so far that can display the groups each user is in as a shortcode, but I then need to turn this list into links to CPT. I emailed the creator about this additional work and heard nothing. This coupled with incompatibility to PHP 7 and I am worried this may not be the longer term solution.

    Not sure what you mean with this. You want to create a HTML list of the groups the current user is in??

    You could try https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/restrict-user-access/. It has similar functionality but not sure if it does what you want.

    I am using the latest version of Groups with PHP 7.0 without a problem.

    I did see the same error you report with PHP 7.1, but no issues or error messages with version 7.0.

    However, I am seeing errors with many plugins with PHP 7.1 — there are some significant changes between 7.0 and 7.1 apparently due to dropping support for deprecated code. That’s not an excuse but it does seem to be an issue impacting a lot of plugins. (And I did report the error message you are seeing when I first saw it about a month ago)

    The main thing is to be aware that there are significant differences between PHP 7.0 and PHP 7.1 and so you should try a downgrade to 7.0 before going back to 5.6.

    @abigailm

    I did notice some issues in less maintained plugins but other than that saw no issues so far.

    I have not had problems with PHP 7.1 on most sites, but I have had problems on two sites with different themes or plugins. But it is very easy for me to change PHP versions on CPanel, and because PHP 7.1 is still very new I haven’t worried about it.

    I just wanted to let @hornet25 know that there are differences between 7.0 and 7.1 and it is not necessary to downgrade to 5.6. In terms of performance, PHP 7.0 is a major improvement over 5.6, so worth using even if there are problems with PHP 7.1.

    Despite the error message reported above, the Groups plugin was functioning well for me with PHP 7.1. The reason I rolled back was not the Groups error, but an error with a different free plugin that does not have as much of a user base.

    @abigailm
    Fair enough.

    PHP 7.0 is a major improvement over 5.6, so worth using even if there are problems with PHP 7.1.

    Definitely!

    Hi all,

    Many thanks for all the feedback on this – we definitely need to have things working with PHP 7.x without PHP Warnings – what we see here is not an error but the warning should still be solved …

    Fixed in version 2.1.1
