What a bad plugin. I understand that there are so many negative reviews.

“[Error] Unknown error while connecting to Paypal. Status code:0.”

This is an error that appears then disappears then reappears when clicking on the PayPal button. This means that sometimes a customer will be able to order but 5 minutes later he will not be able to order anymore. We already have several customer complaints. I think I’ll uninstall it and switch to card only via another extension.

UPDATE: As soon as we remove this plugin and go back to PayPal Standard (default option in WooCommerce) our sales resumed normally.

I would like to report fraudulent practices of Paypal. If we switched to PayPal Payments it is because we were misled by Paypal which said last summer (May 2023), I quote: “the PayPal Standard will disappear this summer“. This was of course a lie. PayPal Standard is still there and works much better than PayPal Payments. If we had not been victims of these fraudulent practices by PayPal, we would have kept PayPal Standard (by default in WooCommerce) which is more than sufficient for us.

Thank you for your UPDATE. For the past two nights, I have been trying to get the PayPal Payment Plugin to work; without success. Debit and credit cards are not being displayed, vaulting cannot be influenced, etc… Now I came across your comment, found the old plugin, installed it – and lo and behold! It works perfectly!

    Thank you for the information.

    Hello @khouya

Thank you for sharing your detailed feedback with us. We truly regret the difficulties you’ve encountered with the PayPal Payments plugin and understand how vital a seamless payment process is to your and your customers’ experience.

The issue marked by “[Error] Unknown error while connecting to PayPal. Status code:0” typically indicates a connection problem between your site and PayPal. Unlike PayPal Standard, the PayPal Payments plugin is designed to integrate PayPal directly into your website. This sophisticated integration means that certain configurations, such as security plugins, could potentially interfere with the connection. This doesn’t necessarily reflect a problem with the plugin itself but rather a compatibility issue that can often be resolved.

Upon reading your update about returning to PayPal Standard and seeing sales resume normally, it suggests there might be a plugin conflict at play. Our support team is experienced in diagnosing such issues and can assist in isolating and resolving any conflicts to ensure PayPal Payments works smoothly for you.

Regarding your concerns about the discontinuation of PayPal Standard, we want to provide some clarity. PayPal Standard has been disabled for new WooCommerce installations as part of a move towards more secure and feature-rich payment solutions, such as PayPal Payments. However, WooCommerce sites set up before this change can still access PayPal Standard, and it will continue to function until PayPal decides to retire the older API. This transition was made to ensure all users have access to the latest payment technologies and security features. There’s no intention of misleading or fraudulent practices in this transition process.

PayPal Payments is the latest and officially supported PayPal integration for WooCommerce, designed to offer a more integrated and feature-rich payment experience. We’re here to support you through any issues or concerns you might encounter with this transition.

We invite you to reach out to our dedicated support team via the plugin support forums. Our team is ready to help you navigate these changes, troubleshoot any integration issues, and ensure that your payment processing is as efficient and seamless as possible.

We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work together to enhance your experience with WooCommerce and PayPal Payments.

    Kind regards,
    Krystian

    Hi,

Thanks for you reply and for the explanation regarding the discontinuation of PayPal Standard.

I will be direct. As soon as the older API will be disable, I’d rather have a site without Paypal than with PayPal Payments. I think the PayPal Payments integration is a failure (I will give some examples). PayPal Standard seems much better integrated. That the problem does not necessarily come from the plugin itself but rather from a compatibility problem doesn’t change anything in practice: we don’t have this compatibility problem with PayPay Standard and this is very important. Compatibility issues are a big problem in WordPress. The fewer we are likely to have, the better it is. However, I have never had the slightest compatibility problem with PayPal Standard. Actually, I’ve never had any problems at all with PayPal Standard.

And it’s not just a compatibility issue. The page order takes much more time to load with PayPal Payments (about 5-8 seconds versus 2-3 seconds with PayPay Standard). Loading time is fundamental. I make sure that all pages on my site load in less than 2 seconds. I don’t remember if PayPal Payments also slows down the other pages (I think it was the case… 1/2 second maybe. I can’t remember. I haven’t noticed any loading issues with PayPal Standard).

Another problem. With PayPal Payments you can order without specifying a parcelshop (Point Relais). Which should not happen. With PayPal Standard, you will get a message asking you to indicate an parcelshop. Which shows to me a better integration of PayPal Standard.

With PayPal Standard, when you click on PayPal on the order page, the payment button changes from “Order” to “Pay with PayPal”. It’s a detail but it shows better integration.
