Error using comment form
-
For the longest time commenting on my blog with jetpack comment form (to allow people to comment with their wordpress accounts) worked just fine. For a couple of days now people seem to get error messages like “please fill out required fields”. Other bloggers seem to have the same problem. I moderate comments manually, but they don’t even show up in “waiting for approval”. I get the same message on other WordPress blogs that use other themes. What’s going on there?

Hello, I have the exact same problem on my two blogs.
It seems to be a Jetpack bug. I found out two things:
1. It only seems to affect WordPress- sites that are hosted on their own domain. Commenting with social accounts on the average *.WordPress.com blog works fine.
2. Commenting on other WordPress sites using social accounts (at least WordPress accounts) works, if you click on “change” below the comment form, and chose your WordPress account again. Even if it already shows you the message “You are commenting using your WordPress account”.
@bruceallen Could you look into this issue, please? That people need to log out of their social accounts first, log back in and are then able to comment without getting an error message to fill out required fields? This seems to happen since the latest Jetpack update, before that everything worked fine with the same site settings.
@miarr0wporg I just left a test comment (the address was just [email protected], site was testsite.com) on this post:
https://resinrapture.com/2022/08/problems-with-comment-form/
It seems to have gone through okay. Can you check to see fi you have it in pending?
The form appears to be working properly for my logged-in WordPress.com account as well.

@zandana01 If you are still having issues after we’ve troubleshooted this a bit more, please do start your own thread and we’ll take a look at your site as well. Thanks!
@madhattersez
The comment went through, thank you. But did you use a social account or did you enter name and email-address? That worked before and works now. And even if it goes into moderation, if you don’t get the error immediately after posting, the comments seem to work.The issue is with people who have used their WordPress or blogger accounts to comment before (to avoid entering their email etc every time) and get an error now.

@madhattersez
PS: Something to do with “remembering” people who have commented before? If logging out and back in works, and you as a new commenter could use the form, it must be something like “memory loss” as far as users are concerned who are frequent commenters.@bruceallen @madhattersez
Update on this: I asked two people to try, one who follows with their WordPress account, one who follows and commented before with their google account. I can’t tell if the form they were seeing was stored in their browser cache or not.For the WordPress account: Just commenting with their account didn’t work, after clicking on “change” and chosing the WordPress icon again it did.
For the Blogger/google account: Error message, even after logging out and logging back in.
When I look at the form from a friends phone, all I see as a choice for commenting with a social account is twitter, facebook and WordPress. I can’t remember if there were other options before, but I am pretty sure there were.
Since many frequent commenters on blogs are other bloggers (from google blogger or other blogging platforms), why doesn’t this work any longer?
I hope it’s OK to add to the same thread, as I found this thread after Googling with the same issues on my blog.
This is a report from a regular commenter:
“Guess what? It happened again today. I got the error on Chrome and then tried on Edge. No luck. The specific error (in both cases) says “Error: Please fill the required fields.” There is also a ‘Back’ button. Click once, does nothing. Click twice, brings you back to the comment section but your comment is gone.”
It’s weird as he’s able to respond to a post from a couple of weeks ago, as he did today:
https://albumreviews.blog/2022/08/11/music-quiz-got-song-titles-quiz/But he’s not able to respond to this new post:
https://albumreviews.blog/2022/08/25/weekly-music-quiz-famous-lead-singers-by-band/I tried turning off the WordPress setting: “Comment author must fill out name and email” and that works, but then all the comments directly from the website (as opposed to the WordPress reader) come through saying “Someone” rather than the actual name.
@fyfeopedia
Thank you!Well, @bruceallen @madhattersez , I think it would be a good idea to roll the latest update back.
We can try to solve things because we are communicating, but thousands of other site owners will only realize that it’s very quiet on their blogs/sites. I only know because frequent commenters told me through other channels. Everything appears to be normal, and comment attempts from users who get this message leave no trace. And since some comments go through, it will take a while until site owners will realize something is amiss.
Even if there was a fix, how are you going to communicate this to people? Some might have tried to go back to the regular comment form, but that can’t be the solution, right?
@fyfeopedia Just went to your blog and tried to comment. Never been on your blog before, not following. I am using the latest version of chrome. I got the usual comment field, below it the line “you are commenting with your WordPress account (logout/change)”.
Not sure how your blog recognized me as a WordPress user or if that was a form stored in my cache from my own site, but well…Just writing and hitting the send button produced the error message. I copied the text before I tried to send. Second attempt: Pasted the text, clicked on “change” and chose the WordPress icon again. Comment went into moderation, you should be able to see it pending.
Thank you, your comment came through once.
Obviously something needs fixing there, as that’s way too much hassle to put commenters through.

Agreed. It would be great if the happiness engineers would at least add a warning text in the comment text input field that users need to log back in to comment for the time being. Until they figured out what causes this. That’s the only way I can think of to communicate to all users who want to use the form that something is different, even if the site authors aren’t aware of the problem.
@madhattersez Hi, thanks for your reply. However, given the fact that it seems that more users are having the exact same problem, is it really necessary for me to start a new thread? It seems to me that we all are talking about the same error here. I have turned off the Jetpack option now, because I want people to be able to comment, but I do need the same solution. ?? If you still find it necessary, I will start a new thread, please let me know what you think. Kind regards
Hi @madhattersez, same issues on my blog which is the first one, and a couple of other bloggers I know. I will advise them to jump on this thread and hope to see a resolution.

Thanks, eden
I’m having the same exact issues. Here’s my original thread:
@madhattersez By the way, the comment you made using the testsite and your email came through, the one you made(?) using your WordPress account didn’t, so you must have gotten the error message. Am I right?
