Error When Install WordPress

I am installing WordPress on my XP laptop.

I installed WAMP2, created a virtual host and created an empty MySQL database to link to WordPress.

I then downloaded WordPress 2.8.4, amended the wp-config.php file to add the new database details.

When I run install.php from my browser I obtain a very strange message telling me I have already installed WordPress and I should clear the old database tables first…

However, I have never installed WordPress before and the database I have configured has no tables!

Please help
