I have just had a recurrence of a weird problem. The circumstances went like this:

    1. I did a database backup (manually) via UpdraftPlus.
    2. I then attempted to download the backup file with the Download db option.
    3. This produced an error message saying there was an issue in attempting to download the file. (I was unable to copy the text of the error, but I noted that the filename it said it had an issue with had a .part extension.)
    4. Although the error message had an “OK” option, it caused my browser (Firefox) to become nonresponsive; any interaction produced an error sound and had no response. I was not able to take a screenshot of this condition and could only resolve it by force-closing the browser via Task Manager.
    5. After restarting the browser, I logged back in to the dashboard. This time, when I tried to navigate to the UpdraftPlus plugin page (/wp-admin/options-general.php?page=updraftplus), I received a 404 error each time.
    6. I tried deactivating and reactivating the plugin, which did not resolve the issue.
    7. I then deactivated, deleted, and reinstalled the plugin through www.ads-software.com. This time, as soon as I activated the plugin, I was able to return to the plugin page without issue.

This happened AFTER the backup operation was complete and the backup was shown in “Existing Backups.” There was nothing wrong with the backup file, which I was able to access and download via FTP.

After reinstalling, I took another backup and downloaded that, which didn’t produce the error, although it took an unusually long time for the file download to complete.

This was mostly just an annoyance — I was able to log back in quickly, and no data or backups were lost — but I’m perplexed by why navigating to the UpdraftPlus plugin page kept returning a 404 error after this happened. I don’t know if it’s a plugin error, a browser error, a connection error, or a connection or browser error causing a plugin error.

This has happened a couple of times earlier this year in mostly the same way, although this is the first time I’ve had to reinstall the plugin to resolve the 404 issue.

    Any idea why this happened?

For reference, I’m running the current Version 1.22.14 of the plugin, on WordPress 6.0.1, accessing the dashboard through Mozilla Firefox 102.0.1 on Windows 10 x64.

    Thanks!

    Hi,

Can you check the PHP error log? The logs should show more information as to why you are getting 404 error.

Do you also have other websites you own or manage hosted on the same server having the same issue?

    Thanks,
    Bryle

There are two other sites on the same server. They were only affected by the browser lockup (as were any other browser tabs I had open); there were no download or 404 issues. (I had taken database backups on all three sites and the issue occurred when downloading the first.)

I don’t have access to PHP error logging, and I don’t think it’s currently enabled by my host.
