  • Check your file permissions for the wp-content/plugins folder and the themes folder. see https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Changing_File_Permissions

It’s more than that. My file permissions are fine. I found that if I uninstall and delete the plugin in question, it will then reinstall (and create the directory) fine.

I have the same issue. I don’t think it is a permission issue since I can uninstall and install themes and plugins, but if I try to update it fails with the above message. This is particularly problematic that when I tried to update a plugin it placed the site in maintenance mode and I had to use cpanel to rename the plugin folder just to get the site back up again.

On another site running 4.3.1 on the same server, everything works normally.
As soon as it updates to 4.4 it has this same problem with updating plugins and themes.

So not a server/permissions thing unless WordPress changed the system requirements.

    Hello Team,

    I’m using
    CENTOS 5.11 i686 standard
    Apache 2.2.27 (Unix)
    PHP/5.4.30

    Is there any fix yet?

    Thanks
    YPanchal

Having same issues (Could not create directory.) It’s not a permissions problem because everything has been updating for years without issue.

    CENTOS 6.7 x86_64 virtuozzo – server
    Apache Version 2.2.27
    PHP Version 5.4.29
    MySQL Version 5.5.46-cll

YPanchal, there are two work arounds. Delete and re-upload the plugin/theme or use FTP to manually upload the new files into place.

    My server is:

    OS: CENTOS 6.7 x86_64
    Apache Version: 2.4.16
    PHP Version: 5.6.16
    MySQL Version: 5.6.27

As of yet we have found no rhyme or reason for this to happen, but we are looking.

Please provide as MUCH detail about your server as possible (OS, PHP version and flavor, etc) where the fix is in progress at https://core.trac.www.ads-software.com/ticket/34976

For now, you can “update” plugins and themes by deleting and installing the latest version.

Adding info from ShanghaiTimes here from the other thread: https://www.ads-software.com/support/topic/unable-to-update-pluginsthemes-post-44-update?replies=7#post-7782787 just to keep it in one place.

    yes, same problem here.
I updated to 4.4 and bam. Now nothing updates.

    WordPress 4.4
    OSX 10.11.2
    Perl-5.22
    PHP 5.6.1

Not only will the update of plugins/themes fail – it then leaves the .maintenance file in the root, and you have to go delete it manually, or you find yourself locked out.

I also notice that it is now creating everything as my username, and not _www, as it used to.
ie. The .maintenance file is owned/group by me. Maybe it should be.

any sign of a fix here. It will be a disaster if an update of WordPress fails like this.

Would you please make sure it’s added over at https://core.trac.www.ads-software.com/ticket/34976 ?

That’s the correct “one place” to keep it in. ??

Looks like that ticket says there is a fix in 4.4.1

Yep, it will be in 4.4.1, no ETA on that yet.

I getting the update error on everything Plugins themes, but it’s not effecting any other part of my site:
This just the top part of the error it goes to about 10,000 words
