I just updated a site to WP 3.7.1, and now have random image files showing errors. The affected files are not appearing on the site or in the media library — just the title appears. If clicked, it appears to be a broken link. If the exact image link is put into the address bar, I receive the error message “The image “https://www.mydomain.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/photoname.jpg” cannot be displayed because it contains errors.

This has happened to approximately one out of every thirty photo files (all jpegs). I have not discovered any other file types affected (yet — have not gone through the entire library).

What could be causing this??? Thanks!!

UPDATE — I take that back, I have now found PDFs which are also corrupt!!!! So it has affected MORE than just jpegs.

    Thanks again for any help!!

One more bit of information….I am beginning to think this does not have anything to do with updating WordPress. Once before, with this host, I added a PDF to the site, checked the link (which worked perfectly for me), then a couple days later had the site owners contact me saying the PDF was “corrupt” and could not be viewed. I deleted and reuploaded the file, and didn’t think about it again. But I am finding about half of the PDF’s on the site are NOW corrupt (“damaged” as Acrobat puts it) when they had been just fine!!!

Could this be a host issue??? I have had problems with this host before.

I’m having this same problem ever since updating to 3.7.1.

If I upload 15 images in the uploader, maybe 4 will return an HTTP error. The number of images that give the error are random every time. Re-uploading the images usually cause no more errors after a couple of times.

Images uploaded on a subdomain (3.7.1 with a different theme and way less plugins) return no errors.

For my money, the image uploader has been slightly borked since 3.5.

For me this problem is an irritant, not an emergency.

Well, my problem is that EXISTING files are being corrupted/damaged. Considering some of the most important content on the site is in PDF’s, it’s kinda a HUGE problem, however, I am not fast to blame WP itself, I think it may be a server issue. I was hoping someone may comment that had heard of such a thing, and could verify that is is a hosting issue, NOT a WP issue.

Anyone care to help with that????

Have you asked your hosting company about this or checked as to whether your site has been hacked?

@fcgrabo – please start your own thread if you need help – it’s unlikley your issue is the same.

The site has not been hacked to my knowledge (everything else looks fine).

I have not yet contacted the host, because they are the WORST host on Earth!!! I have had issues with them before, because they think every problem is a WordPress issue, and tell me to come here! Very frustrating people.

I was hoping to get a “smoking gun” on this forum, so that I could take it to the host so they don’t try the old “It’s WordPress’s fault, we cannot help you.”

    Thank you for the help!!

You are not alone. Are you getting image that are distorted but readable? (lines through image, weird coloring etc)? Hopefully someone can verify if it is a WP issue of host, at the moment I say WP because I build a lot of sites on different host and have only experience this on 3.7+ thus far.

@xtremefaith – We aren’t aware of any “WP issues” related to this – I’d suggest starting your own thread if you need help with it –

I cannot view the corrupted images AT ALL. I only receive the error message I posted in the opening post.

As for the PDF’s, they cannot be viewed in the browser. If I download one of the PDF’s and attempt to view with Acrobat, I receive the error message saying the file is either not a supported file type or because it was damaged.
