    Hi,

I noticed that a client’s site had not been updating plugins and themes for quite a while.

We had a bit of a panic when I upgraded her to WP 5.0 – I restored her back to 4.9.8, which of course had all those plugins needing updating. She was on a deadline for an event, so we decided to keep everything as-is – no WP, theme or plugin updates. To accomplish this, I clicked on “Disable all updates”. Everything below was grayed out so I figured that would do the trick.

Today, she noticed all her plugins had updated!

I had run into something similar with a different client (that I never figured out) between Bluehost and EUM. Bluehost offers the option to automatically update WP, themes and plugins, and sure enough, it was turned on.

Thankfully, it didn’t update WordPress to 5.0 (at least not yet!)

(Just to be thorough, I looked in the wp_config.php for, and neither define(‘AUTOMATIC_UPDATER_DISABLED’, true); nor define( ‘DISABLE_WP_CRON’, true ); were present.)

Turning off EUM and having Bluehost take over updating makes sense.

What I’m wondering is if the Bluehost updating option being enabled was somehow preventing EUM from working, and neither was performing updates? I’m guessing that turning auto updates off in Bluehost will let EUM take over for future updates?

I got an answer of sorts from Bluehost.

Essentially, turning off their “automatic update” buttons doesn’t do anything.

The option in WordPress tools , is not working properly , because sometimes , if there is new updates for the website it will be updated automatically . and there is some issue with WordPress tools update option which we are aware of , and our admins are working on to resolve the issue .

Inserting define(‘AUTOMATIC_UPDATER_DISABLED’, true) into the wp-config file is the ONLY way to keep Bluehost from forcing updates.

Which renders EUM useless for this client, and anyone else using Bluehost ??

    Not your fault.

BTW I didn’t get an answer to why it was blocking updates, so I can’t shed any light there, sorry.
