European address format

    Hi guys! First, I would like to thank you very much for your work. The plugin that you have created is just great! We are planning to use it on a new website of Narcotics Anonymous – Region Poland.
    We managed to import the data from our old database and we are working on a translation. We will send it to you once it’s approved.

    We are facing one issue with the address format. In Poland (and in Europe in general) the address format is different than in the US. We write the house number after the street name, the post code before the city name etc. We would need a way to customize the way the ‘address’ field is constructed.

    For example:
    “71D Ozimska
    Opole, opolskie 45-368”

    should become
    “Ozimska 71D
    45-368 Opole, woj. opolskie”

    It would be nice if the plugin had a setting for that.

  • Hm, I see what you’re saying. The Google Geocoding API, which is what this plugin relies on for this info, will return the following for that address:

    Ozimska 71D, 45-368 Opole, Poland

    Does that work, even if it’s not exactly the address you were hoping for?

    The main barrier to using this instead of what we’re doing now is that we break the address into two lines in a lot of places because it looks better, like on the meeting and location detail pages, as well as in the map infowindows. I suppose one way we could handle this would be to use this address but replace the commas with breaks. That might be a problem in places where the address has commas that shouldn’t appear as breaks. I’ll need to do some testing.

    The second issue is how to switch over all the data currently at rest without messing things up too badly. I’ll need to come up with a good strategy for that.

    Thanks for the tip about the email, it should be working now.

    Another issue is that we use the address isolated on the meeting list page. So we’d switch over to showing the full address, but stopping at the first comma.

    This splitting idea will be an issue in edge cases where there is a comma in the street address, city, or country, but I think that it’s not bad enough to outweigh the benefits of proper internationalization, assuming that address above works for you.

    I’m going to run it by the people at https://alcoholics-anonymous.eu/meetings/, but this is sounding like a good change. Let me know what you think.

    So I’d probably add some logic that US addresses would get a comma put back to make:

    1122 Fair Ave
    San Jose, CA 95122
    USA

    Oh wait, sorry to spam you with replies, but are you looking to do this in Polish? That can actually be arranged. In that case your address would be

    Ozimska 71D
    45-368 Opole
    Polska

    Hi Josh,

    the format of the address from the last post would work for us.
    Does it mean that we only need to pass a language to the maps API and it would solve the whole thing?

    Ok good. You won’t have to do anything, it’ll use the blog’s language setting with the geocoding. It will be in 2.5.3, out tomorrow probably. I’ll let you know.
