I have been revisiting an old issue with circumstances where the location in an outlook.ics import is not generating a map. To do that I had been

    1. importing the events
    2. looking at the results
    3. deleting the events in WP
    4. making changes in the source calendar
    5. attempting to re-import the modified events
    6. finding that the events would not (apparently) import

After a lot of trials, tribulations and finally wondering “what if…” I decided to empty the bin and then found that the events imported as expected.

Is it the INTENDED functionality of the import process to attempt to match events in the import stream to those in the “deleted” bin … and then not present them as ‘visible’ events?

  • Hi @townman,

    I apologize for the confusion.

Imported events can be moved to Draft or even Trash — and unless permanently deleted, will still exist and contain the event ID. This means that any feed import will import the events into the existing event ID, even if it is not Published. This is the normal behaviour for imports — it is the logic of the technology.

Deleting the imported event permanently fixes the problem.

This is a feature that can be used if a calendar owner wants to edit an imported event. Normally, you can’t edit imported events because the feed sync will over write your edits. The solution is to Clone the imported event, and save the original imported event as a Draft. The update will go to the Draft event but will not show in the calendar. You can then edit the cloned version to your needs.

    Hi Sunny,
Thank you for the prompt response confirming the observed behaviour. In principle I see nothing wrong with the behaviour … so long as it is understood by users that this is how it works. Hopefully this post might be found useful by others finding this behaviour as odd. The import reporting success but the events remaining invisible.

On the point of local edits to events, I will make a point of reviewing that. One of the things I have been doing is after events have been imported is to change their category when their status changes. [Unfortunately outlook .ics files do not contain the category information.] IIRC the category remains as changed afterwards, even though the import process content contains the same event’s other updates.
