• What is the best events plugin for WordPress? I have been using EC3 for some time now but it seems to be abandoned. Gigs Calendar and Events Calendar both appear to be in development. Does anyone have any experiences they would like to share–or, better yet–links to live implementations? What are the (non-obvious) features and limitations of each plugin?

    Thanks everyone!!

  • I have this exact same question!

In addition, I would like to know how they work with 2.5 as I am starting a new site and would like to go straight to 2.5 and use an event calendar if any are available!

    Thanks,
    Andrew

EC3 works with 2.5 if you patch it–that’s all I know. I’m more interested in the others but converting a database of hundreds of events to some new plugin requires as much foreknowledge as can be found here on the WP support forum… which, at the moment, doesn’t seem like too much ?? but here’s hoping…

My dev/test site is https://www.andrewteg.com/blog/ and I’ve got a couple notes on event calendars I’ve tried going and I’ve got the Gig one installed at the moment. It would have to be retrofitted a bit I think to work as a regular event calendar because by default it just shows upcoming and things fall off to the archive (Calendar Archive on my site) after they happen. And I don’t see a real month view which can be a bummer for Gigs.

EDIT: Note the post “04/17/08” is a Gigs Cal event. I do like how it gets added to your blog as a post even though it’s not a real post. The sidebar is for Gigs Calendar too at the moment.

I just tried your calendar Andrew and got:
Plugin could not be activated because it triggered a fatal error.

Fatal error: main() [function.require]: Failed opening required ‘/home/mysite/public_html/wp-content/plugins/calendar/wp-blog-header.php’ (include_path=’.:/usr/lib/php:/usr/local/lib/php’) in /home/mysite/public_html/wp-content/plugins/calendar/wp-calendar.php on line 12

Might have done something wrong on my end though.

Hmm, I don’t have a calendar I wrote myself. I’ve just installed and reviewed a few at my test site as I make a decision on how to display my events.

It looks like you tried to install https://www.kieranoshea.com/projects/calendar/ and if so, it looks like you put all the files into the plugins directory. Instead, that one requires you to put files in the root so the file you downloaded wp-calendar.php should go straight into your blog home folder which for you appears to be /home/mysite/public_html/

    I hope that makes sense…

Wow thanks. Was kinda late when I was messing around.

I did try to install that calendar. Got the files in the right spot and activated. went to mysite/calendar and got a 404 page. Install instructions on the plugin page say:

    7. Visit your blog URL /calendar to see your calendar in action

Did I miss something along the way?

I think you have to have permalinks enabled and also edit your .htaccess file for that plugin to work. It’s in the install instructions but perhaps you didn’t get the htaccess file saved and re-uploaded? You can try mysite/wp-calendar.php too as that may show the calendar for you even if you don’t have your htaccess edited.

Really would like a good events calendar that just plain works. Been using ‘Events Calendar 3’ on my WP 2.5 install and it lists things in the sidebar, but clicking on the items doesn’t yield the necessary information about the event.

(see right sidebar labelled ‘skate calendar’.

Any recommendations of a sidebar calendar that actually works would be much appreciated. I think Events Calendar wants to do some kind of contextual popup. I’d prefer the user visit an actual calendar entry where they can copy-paste the info into emails, etc. Popups are pretty unusable for the visitor.

I have Permalinks Day and Name enabled. I did edit my htaccess as well. I made an entry into the calendar and one worked one didnt. The date entry like 20080418 worked as opposed to 04182008.

Got a 404 when trying to access mysite/wp-calendar.php as well as mysite/calendar.

    I’ll work on this a bit more…

    Guys,

I’m really liking wpng-calendar which is a Google Code project that integrates great with WordPress. You can see a screenshot of it on a page at my site at https://www.andrewteg.com/blog/event-calendars/wpng-calendar/ and also notice the sidebar which shows events. I have it hooked up to the MLB Braves schedule for testing but it can hook into any public Google calendar and display on a page, as a widget, or both. The admin is just enter your Google key, enter your Google calendar feed, and enter your number of entries and whether or not to show navigation. Pretty simple and just plain works and shows events that are clickable. Plus you can just say “view/download the whole calendar here” and link to Google somewhere on your site so people can subscribe or download your calendar since it’s already Google-fied.

    The plugin homepage is https://code.google.com/p/wpng-calendar/

    What do you guys think?

Events Calendar 311 rc3 works fine with WordPress 2.5 if you patch it. I’ve also emailed Alex Tingle who wrote it and says he’s been pretty busy but rest assured, he plans to update his Events Calendar plugin.

In the spirit of ‘open source’ if anyone wants a zipped version of the calendar I mentioned above (which works OK for me) let me know. I would of course suggest that anyone feeling generous make a donation to the author.
    ??

Any more info on the patch for EC3?

I like ec3 but when you click on the day of the event it doesn’t show up since it was written prior to the day of the event.

    Does the patch fix this?

    Thanks!

The “calendar” calendar is going crazy. I have a mailbox full of:
    /public_html/calendar/tools/’ ; php -q ‘send_reminders.php’ > /dev/null ;
    Almost 4000 messages.
When i go to the edit calendar page I get a 404 page. Probably because I have no tools directory under the calendar dir.
Just going to delete the whole thing.

That line s from a cron job I found. deleted it, no more mail
