Today we have noticed the following ERROR message which appears on top of our events calendar page whenever we select category or page through to next month.

Something went wrong while fetching events.
    The request status is: 200
The error thrown was: SyntaxError: Unexpected token <

We have the following software versions installed.

    WordPress Plugin 4.4.1
    Calendar 2.3.7

    PLEASE NOTE
    >> The WordPress update has only just updated today due to a server issue which required a re boot.
    >> The issue has ONLY occurred since the WordPress update.
    >> We have tried de activating all Plugins and this did NOT solve the problem.

Here is a link to our events page.
    https://www.zabikers.co.za/events/

Its seems OBVIOUS that there is a CLASH with your current version and the current version of WordPress… ARE YOU AWARE OF THIS??? Can you HELP???

    Kind Regards
    Simon Morton.

    Hi There.

The issue that I reported last week is now fixed.

We are on a managed cloud hosting package.
I found out yesterday that an engineer at our hosting company had
changed our server from Apache to Nginx. This was to try and improve our performance.

I was not aware of this!

Having spoken to him yesterday i mentioned the issue i was having with your plugin.
He suggested we revert back to Apache.. On doing this PROBLEM WAS SOLVED.

    Sorry for the inconvenience.

    Kind Regards
    Simon.

Hey Simon, I’m really glad this got sorted out! Until we figure our the core problem for this we’ll create a post for other users to know what to look for.
Thanks again for the heads up,

    Hi sneax1980!

I’m sorry that you had problem when switching web servers. The problem shouldn’t happen at all. Can you please ask your hosting company to provide some information about the hosting environment?

    Some questions are:

Which OS and version are they running?
Which nginx version are they running?
Are they using PHP or HHVM? And which version?

And any other information that your hosting company finds relevant.

    Thanks!

There are too many options to resolve the issue listed on this thread and other threads.

Since it is an issue that occurs with several users, I would like a definitive solution from the developer.

Sorry but I am SOOOO confused now!

I have attempted to follow this thread and have tried the solutions -step-by-step- to no avail.

I turned “Strict compatibility content filtering” on and
I turned “Use frontend rendering” on …

I’m not getting the syntax error anymore BUT my calendar(s) are still a mess…

    #1 – When I open a calendar, it says <<2015 <JAN FEBRUARY 2016 FEB> 2017>>
shouldn’t it say MAR> since March is the next month???

#2 – I have several calendars that display events according to TAGS, I don’t want the “TAGS” option to display on the calendar so I am using display_filters=”false” in the shortcode BUT the TAGS show up… How can I turn this off?

The plugin wasn’t doing this before… it’s like fix one thing and another one breaks… please help!

    Thanks.

    Running WP 4.4.2 with ai1ec 2.3.8

lifebridgesoha, sorry to hear about your new issue.
Please open another ticket for it as this topic was for SyntaxError only and resolved for the time being (we’ve opened a bug in our system on the core problem).
Ben will look into your issue as well, and there are many factors for which an issue like your can appear. All last builds have been tested and are stable, but Ben will probably need some server info from your side and other stuff.
    Thanks for understanding,

    Hi Guys,

sneax1980: Nice! your site is working again. Thanks for you feedback about the Nginx server not working.

Besides the reason found by sneax1980 the only another reason I found is when using and old PHP version (< 4.0.5) and the request format html.

The thing is, before the Syntax error be showed, another errors happens:

    <h1>Exception thrown</h1><p>Either iconv or mb_convert_encoding must be available.</p>

As you can see at this image Taffy’s unexpected error

The iconv and mb_converting_encoding are PHP functions and the core plugin just throws this exception if these functions don’t exists. In according with PHP documentation, these functions exists for PHP >= 4.0.5 (https://php.net/manual/pt_BR/function.iconv.php) and PHP >= 4.0.6 (https://php.net/manual/pt_BR/function.mb-convert-encoding.php).

So I’m driven to think that the PHP version of your site is less than PHP 4.0.5.

Could you please check your PHP version and tell us?

    Best

PS: WP recommends an PHP 5.6 or greater (https://www.ads-software.com/about/requirements/)

I am still looking for a solution on the Syntax Error. I started this thread back in the beginning of December and still waiting for some resolution – https://www.ads-software.com/support/topic/clicking-next-month-error/page/2?replies=32. Benjamin asked a while back: Do you use a cache plugin? No we do not have a cache plugin. What code is in your .htaccess file? Using nginx.

    Here is our server details:
The site is running onNginx. Not Apache. Here’s the php version output:
    PHP 5.6.15 (fpm-fcgi) (built: Nov 20 2015 09:36:35)
Copyright (c) 1997-2015 The PHP Group
Zend Engine v2.6.0, Copyright (c) 1998-2015 Zend Technologies
Running Ubuntu 14.04 LTS version of O/S
    nginx version: nginx/1.9.7

I read through this thread and I tried some of it and the rest was not applicable.

Hoping to hear back from you guys.

    Hey [email protected],

We’ll prepare a post about this issue. It’s not something we can fix, as it’s not an issue with our plugin. We’re capturing the current behaviours, solutions we have until now, and some suggestions for occurrences that we’re not able yet to find solutions for. I will follow up on this thread when the post in ready. From what I’ve seen using Apache instead of Nginx has worked better.
