• I finally got everything set up on my new website after writing this blog for years– got connected with AdSense, finally got AdSense working after fussing with garbage for hours, and then I send out my first ever newsletter today and suddenly the site is just completely gone. I can log into WordPress, but there is no content, the theme was different, the users were all gone, and all of the content is gone. Looks like you can find a cached version from Google, but that isn’t the internal stuff.

It looks like it is still on my webhost’s server and was backed up just this morning, but Ionos doesn’t really have tech support– i’ve waited on hold for half an hour two separate times and not gotten through to anyone. But their directions for restoring the backup don’t really make sense and they won’t do it for me.

I hadn’t done anything weird, just wrote a normal post that was scheduled to go up this afternoon.

    Any ideas?

Your site (https://handbuiltcity.org/) opens just fine for me ??

Try clearing your browser cache, or try different computer.

Yeah, the page loads, but the seven years of content are all gone, it’s all blank. Same when log into admin, everything is gone

I see you’re using Themegrill. Unfortunately, there was a nasty (now patched) vulnerability in the themegrill demo importer plugin. If you have that plugin and it was the older version, then it’s possible your database was damaged. The solution is to (1) delouse your site and (2) restore your database from a backup.

Get a fresh cup of coffee, take a deep breath and carefully follow this guide. When you’re done, you may want to implement some (if not all) of the recommended security measures.

If you’re unable to clean your site(s) successfully, there are reputable organizations that can clean your sites for you. Sucuri and Wordfence are a couple.

Steve, I appreciate the response. It appears that this is what happened. Ionos, my garbage heap of a web host, says they’re working on it, but it’s taking quite some time. I’m hoping they figure out because I’m really not sure I have the technical skill to do this myself and I can’t afford to pay someone to fix it

Once you have your site back, ***** MAKE BACKUPS *****. Don’t count on your host or lucky stars. Use a backup plugin that supports scheduled, off-site backups. I like “backwpup” for that.
