Evolve theme: background images don't show in IE8

Just trying out the Evolve theme and noticed some background images don’t show in IE8. Specifically:
menu bar, search icon, social icons, shadow under top menu, shadow under slide container.
They don’t show in the live demo either so I’m guessing it’s some dopey IE setting I need to change. Perfect in Firefox.
Any ideas?
