I just realised I have this error message on one of my websites.
EWWW Image Optimizer requires exec() or an API key. Your system administrator has disabled the exec() function, ask them to enable it.

Do I need to ask my hosting provider to enable exec()?

Yes, although most will not enable it, it never hurts to ask.

Cheers – I’ve asked and they say that exec() is “not supported on any of our servers”.

That’s odd as I didn’t see the EWWW notification message until just recently, and the plugin has been active for a year or so with no problem.

Has anything changed with any of the latest releases?

There hasn’t been much change, and all of it very recent, so it wouldn’t explain why it worked fine for a year or so. A couple months ago there was a regression where the notice would not be displayed when it should, and then I fixed it about a month after that with version 3.1.1. My suspicion is that your webhost changed their policy on exec(), which means the only way to use any of the image optimization plugins out there is to use their API. Details on the EWWWW IO API are here: https://ewww.io/

Thanks – it has to be that because I’ve just remembered of another website using EWWW on the same shared hosting now suddenly showing the message, and it was definitely not there as recently as 6 weeks ago when I first installed the plugin.

On another note (and sorry if this is not the right place to talk about this), I’m slightly confused about the pricing plans. Basically for minimal usage (let’s say about 30 images per month) how much one would spend to make API calls?

    Thanks for your replies.

As for the paid plans, please see https://ewww.io/contact-us/

Of course, thank you. And just to confirm: hosting provider did recently disable exec() for security reasons. Mystery solved!
