Examples of WP that don’t look like blogs?
-
I’m researching the possibility of using WordPress to drive a content site for a client. Might you have a favorite example or two of a site where WP is being used but doesn’t look like a traditional blog site? Thanks.

Now that’s the first one I’ve seen that really doesn’t remotely look like a blog. Nicely done.
I have designed a few sites lately that use WordPress as CMS without actually using the blog “function”:
https://www.eventmanufaktur.at
The reason I will continue to use WordPress as a CMS even for non-blog sites is the simplicity with which I can get things done, and also because of the extremely simple and straight-forward userinterface for my client.
I just need to write a little instruction-manual on how to use posts/pages along with categories and tags to put content where they want it.
smarttimes.at was the hardest I did till now, mainly because of the languages needed. I wasn’t happy with the plugins that were available, so I just created de/en/fr/it pages and put the corresponding subpages in there. Then there’s a manually programmed language-switch thing that took me a while to figure out. This one is still under construction:

And it’s using posts as Projects, the news are (obviously) posts with a “news” category, and the rest is static Pages.Oh, and I love one-column layouts ??
What is the point of using WordPress if your goal is to NOT have it look like a blog?
I used to have an html website with reviews and because archiving took way too much of my time, I decided to make a database-based website. Looking around, I ran in WP and played around a little. Also I wanted to make something that doesn’t look like a “blog”, for the simple reason that my website isn’t supposed to be one. I AM quite happy with the result, but just like with any of the examples in this thread, it is obviously a WP-page, for the simple reason that I have a sidebar, “categories”, archives, etc. and especially the header and footer quickly give away the WP background. The “bloggy” things that I tried to get rid off are especially the “chronology” that WP puts out in anything (searching, archiving, overviews, etc.). So, I leave it up to you if I succeeded in making a non-blog-looking WP site (with five WP installations, here‘s one).
I am busy restyling my corporate website with WordPress. Just to handle dynamic content a little better. I did take a look at Joomla, but that is much to complicated.
Here’s one from me:

I discuss some design aspects about this site in my blog:

Reasons to use WordPress as a CMS:
1) Most CMS applications offer much more functionality than WordPress, but the trade-off is greater complexity. WP offers a balanced option with a super easy administrative interface. It wouldn’t be suitable for large, multi-author sites. But for a small business, it seems nearly perfect.
2) WP is lightweight and it installs on standard shared hosting accounts. No dedicated servers or high-end hosting accounts needed.
3) As a front-end developer who’s comfortable with some PHP, WP offers a world of options. The only limitation is my own creativity and time!
I have been convinced that WordPress can be used for a Content Management System rather than using it as a ‘normal’ blog and I was right. Over the last couple of weeks I have designed a couple of sites with WordPress that are not blogs. My photographs site at:

This uses WordPress in order to generate the pages as well as the navigation bars. The main one is regular pages and the sub navigation bar is generated through child pages function. It works really well. I have also done my web design business web site in the same way. View this site here:

What do you think?

Kewl!
Ok, here is the site that I work on full time. I already was a WP fan, so when we talked about a website for the journal, I said kewl, we gonna make it with WordPress!
It’s an alternative culture newspaper in Montreal… It’s in french. I don’t think it looks like a classic blog…

It’s not well polished yet for my taste and It was our first try. I’m working on a brand new theme now, for a better layout!

Is there a package I can acquire for setting up a blog for my two sites https://www.mortgagebestrate.co.uk and https://www.effectivebusiness.info as itg would be a good way to obtain fresh text and optimise the sites.
Yes leecar, it’s called “wordpress,” and you’re here. (click “download.”)
Sorry about the sarcasm, but I can’t help thinking you’re just trying to get some google juice…
my thoughts exactly, and fgs, hasn’t this thread died yet. i thought there was a dedicated area for this. I must have misread.
It’s good to see what can be done with WordPress. Until a friend of mine showed me his totally non-blog layout of a client’s WordPress site, I thought WP always had to look a certain way. That got me started, and now i pretty much do everything with WP.
But it’s strange that people take kubric and change the header and think it’s not a blog anymore …

-Based off of the BlueprintCSS framework.
-Script.aculo.us javascript implemented on the 4 horizontal buttons.
-Drop down menu based off of wp_list_pages, add a page and it adds it to the drop down up to 5 pages deep.
-Custom author page based off of the GridlineLite theme by Thad Allender
-5 widget locations, 1 sidebar, 4 across the bottomStill a work in progress but getting there.

-based off of the Kubrick theme, just screwing around with it.I think that looks like a blog. Its a decent design, but it looks like a blog. Most anything with a “this is the temperature here” block looks like a blog ??
