    Generally speaking, yes, but not with A List Apart, apparently. They give it away freely…they specifically say that you don’t have to ask. ??

    heh heh… i took a CSS from blue robot and credited them in the about section and the source code. ??

    Just because I am in a “stirring stuff up” mood today…here’s a quote from ALA’s copyright page:

    A List Apart gives away CSS styles, JavaScript, PHP and Perl scripts, XHTML markup techniques, and other bits of Source Code for the use of its readers. You may freely copy, paste, and modify any of this code for use on your own web projects large or small, commercial or non-commercial. You need not ask permission to do so.     If a site prints some css or code, or gives you a link to download it, and says it’s free to use, that is fine. What is not fine is to view the source code/css of the site and copy it without asking first. I offer templates and css for people to use on my site, but I wouldn’t be happy if someone came along and took the layout of the site itself. Basically, if the owner specifically says you can take it, take it; if they don’t, leave it alone.
    I just thought that needed clearing up after some things that were mentioned in the ‘Formatting’ thread, and because pande’s original post wasn’t very clear about what had actually been taken from ALA ??

    right you can use their CSS, scripts without getting written permission.

    for me its clear: the css is a technical instrument as mathematics , but different to that its the particular way that code render a layout, a unique complex of colors, forms, pictures, that it′s a layout that makes a page distinctive and particular from others pages and at the same time a way the author expresses his personality, if you clone that particular layout , whithout author`s permission, you are not in a fair use of the work and effort of others.

    It’s quite clear, you can’t steal their layout :

    You may adapt elements of our CSS in your own projects, but the unique combination of images, colors, sizes, typography, and positioning (a€?the designa€?) is copyright 2003 A List Apart Magazine and Happy Cog Studios and may not be reproduced.
