Excerpt not visible even though ticked

I am building my website and I wanted the text on the home page above the portfolio images. I read that I need to activate excerpts for a static page and customise the theme for the posts page. However even after activating the excerpts from Screen Options and putting text in the excerpt box. There is no text visible on the home page.
