Excerpt Problem

In the “show content” menu in the widget, if I select “Excerpt” it shows the full content. If I select “Full content” it shows the features image twice and the full content.
Ideally I would like it to show an excerpt if one exists, and to show nothing except the image and title if no excerpt exists.
Any suggestions how to configure this would be most welcome.
