exclude categories checkboxes not sticking

Hello,
When I go into the settings > searching page, category exclusion and check the categories that I want to exclude then I press “save the options” at the bottom of the page, the checkboxes are not checked when I return to look at that part of the page. I think the setting is saving but it’s not too clear.
