exclude category widget

Hello,

I’m running a weblog with two categories.

Is it possible to create a widget in the sidebar to let people choose between the two categories, and exclude the other category automatically on the frontpage?

Ideally there’s a cookie placed to remember the visitors preference.

Is this possible? (I couldn’t find a plugin…)
