I have noticed that file names are being added to “Exclude files from scan that match these wildcard patterns. (One per line).” section of the options. The files are not being added by me and I am the only user/ Admin of the site.

Would this be an indication of malicious code or a compromised web site? I have been deleting the files from the list and running a new scan. Most often there has been no issues found. However, it is a source of concern.

This has happened on more than one WordPress web site.

I am using the free version 6.0.24 of Wordfence and WP version 4.4.2

I thank you in advance for your attention to my question.

    Hi,

Generally, this doesn’t mean the site is compromised, but it might mean that your scans are not running smoothly and sometimes fail. Wordfence automatically excludes files from scans if they seem to cause a scan to fail, but usually it is only large zip files (like site backups) or extremely large images, movies, audio files, etc.

If they’re ordinary small files, following the steps here may make the scans more stable:
    My scan doesn’t finish

The “max execution time” is the most likely causes, followed by the memory limit. Let us know if you still have trouble after adjusting the settings.
