Exclude ‘Out of Stock’ from Featured Products on Specific Page

Can anyone help me with this please? I’d like to hide/exclude ‘out of stock’ products from displaying in the Featured Products section on my home page. Currently, out of stock items are set to display only at the end of their relevant categories, and never show in Relevant/Upsells, using function/filter hook. Homepage is set to show 12 featured items in random order. All of these seem to work fine. Now I need to stop sold-out items from displaying in the Featured section. Currently I do this manually from admin when a featured item becomes out of stock.
