Excluding meta data from Page Update

Is there any way to prevent meta data from being updated when hitting the Update button when editing a page?

I have a plugin that updates meta data via an ajax pop-up, but it does not update the hidden input fields of the page editor. So if you first change meta data via the plugin and then update the page content, the page’s meta data is re-written with the old meta data.
