Export get stuck since a week

Since about a week I’m having issues with exporting a WP site. The export just hangs at a certain percentage and the spinner just keeps spinning. It occurs every time around 30 minutes. I’ve checked PHP settings and there is no time out at 30 minutes. I’ve also noticed that CPU load and memory on the server keep increasing during the backup, is this normal? At around the time the the export usually crashes, the physical memory hits the max on the server charts. After that the CPU load on the server drops back from max to normal (25%).

I’ve contacted the ISP and they also said the site was using extreme resources. I have an expanded hosting package with 6 CPU cores and 4GB RAM so that should be sufficient I think.
