• I tested the Export Personal Data tool under Tools and either found a bug or don’t understand how it functions. The site I’m designing allows users to sign-up and it sets them to the role of Subscriber. If I use a Subscriber’s email address to request a Personal Data Export, the process works properly. However, if I use an email address for someone who isn’t a Subscriber but has left a comment on a post, it fails once the user confirms the request. If I click either the “Send export link” or “Download personal data” links, it fails at 20%. Is WordPress 5.8.1 unable to Export Personal Data for users who don’t have a role?

    No, should work for any commenter, registered or not. If the user had a lot of comments, there could be some system file size limitation, but the data is all text, so that seems unlikely. Check your error log for possible clues. If you check immediately after having trouble with getting a download, any recently added errors are likely related.

    If there are no errors, the trouble could be due to your theme or one of your plugins. Narrow down the cause by selectively switching themes and deactivating plugins until you’re able to get a download.

    @bcworkz thanks for the suggestions!

    This is a brand new site and not available to the public yet. So, I know it’s not a file size limit given that the user is a separate email of mine and I’ve only posted twice to check this function.

    That said, I’ll start ruling out your other suggestions. Hopefully one of them will lead to the issue. I’ll post an update once I’ve had a chance to go through them.

    Thanks,

    It took some digging, but I think I’ve found the offending plugin. It appears to be GamiPress, although I won’t know until I hear back from them. Here’s the post on their forum to see if I can get a response and fix.

    I’ll post back if there is a final answer and fix to this issue.
