I am attempting to export blog posts from an old website to the new website. The export appears to work and generates and xml file. When I import the xml file into the new website, it appears to be successful, no error messages. However, it does not actually import any posts or image content. It only imports the users from that blog.

  • What versions of WP are you working with?
Is the old site still online?
The posts should be there, especially if you don’t get error messages. The users are created as authors for the posts. The import has a checkbox you need to tick in order to get the images downloaded, as they do not exist in the xml file.

That’s weird! Are you seeing any error or problem reported?

I’m wondering if the file is just too big!

You can use most any XML file chunker on that WXR file to split it. I was looking to find the one I used but then remembered I’m on the Chromebook right now and all that stuff is done on the Win 10 laptop or one of the three desktops here.

Anyway, try a splitter/chunker and watch the screen during the import.

How do I know this? some of my content aggregators run to 40k posts and I had to import those from one site to another. I’ve seen the first pass not work but bring in users like you mentioned. Splitting the file worked for me when the file was borderline too big.

A file bigger than your host can handle will throw an upload error. Much easier to figure out and fix.

I have WordPress 5.1.1 on the old site. And Version 5.2.3 on the new site.

The old site is still active.

On the import, I did check mark that box “Import Attachments” box.

I’m thinking the error may be on the export side because I can import the xml file on the new site and there are no errors. I get the “All done. Have fun” message. Then I check on posts and there is only the 1 original post from starting the website. But I don’t get any errors on the exporting either. Just select the posts and the date range and hit export and it appears to work…

Thank you for the idea the file was too large. I was able to successfully get this blog to export and then successfully import a few months at a time. A bit of a hassle but at least it’s working… Solved.
