• I am changing hosting packages and want to export my entire wordpress site and import it to the new hosting.

I am aware of the “moving wordpress” codex page but am still unsure of how images in posts/pages will be handled.

Is it just a case of copying and uploading the wp-content folder and importing the wordpress .xml file or is there more too it?

Edit: I intend to change my domain from mysite.co.uk to mysite.com. As such can I just do a find & replace for .co.uk to .com in the .xml file. Then if I upload the wp-content folder the images should work right?

  • I think when importing the exported xml file the script will (attempt to) download the images from your old site – although I may be wrong.

I seem to remember when doing this you get an option to download images etc. that the exported xml file points to.

You could do a test on a local install and see what the exported script includes when importing it on your test site.

OK I’ll try on a local install, thanks

No problem, let me know how you get on.

It kinda worked! Images were successfully imported for some posts but failed for others.

Any ideas what the best way to recover the missed images are?

See if you can figure out why some images failed. Was there something consistent about them? Were they hosted on your site or just linked to etc?

Beyond that I don’t really know, only used the exporter a handful of times, and then mostly for data dumps to local installs.

All the images were hosted on the old site in the wp-content folder. There’s no obvious reason why they failed.

I sense a bit of a task manually recovering the missed ones.
