Exporting/Importing CPT's and Custom Taxonomies

  • The default WP import/export plugin isn’t importing Custom Post Types and their taxonomies.

    The Custom Post Types were created by a premium theme… somehow… but on the new site I’m creating a new theme and want to import the content from the old one.

    I’m probably an idiot but I’ve been Googling and searching and I can’t find even a mention of this specific problem. I tried some CSV exporter plugins which didn’t work.

    So how do I import the Custom Post Types & Taxonomies to a new site?

    When I Googled “wordpress import custom post type” I got this link at the top of my search:

    and this CSV Importer forum link (see https://www.ads-software.com/support/topic/plugin-csv-importer-import-to-custom-post-type?replies=18) states “Support for custom post types has been added in 0.3.2. Grab it while it’s hot! :)”

    Beyond this, I know nothing about the plugin. But, it’s got a 4.3 star rating out of 151,496 downloads AND a video on its www.ads-software.com plugin page:

    So, LOL, it can’t be all bad. Hope this in some way or fashion helps you.

    Hi Randy. Thanks for the response.

    But…

    1. This plugin requires to export/import one module at a time. Meaning post, page, category, etc. Which makes it completely useless.
    2. The tutorial video sucks and wastes time.
    3. When importing I already have to have custom post types created etc. Which again makes it completely pointless.

    I would’ve just done it by exporting/importing the database, but I’ve wasted hours fruitlessly exporting&importing databases on different hosts and ended up doing it manually before.

    But since plugins didn’t work I tried it anyway… And it imported everything EXCEPT Custom Post Types!

    What the hell?

    Why does WordPress make importing and exporting Custom Post Types so difficult?

    Okay… Somehow these Custom Post Types are connected to the theme.

    If I switch the theme then they disappear.

    Does anyone know why and how this happens and if there’s a way to “unconnect” these Custom Post Types from the theme so they would work with every theme?
